Two CHS juniors named GHP finalists

Two Carrollton High School juniors will be headed to Georgia Southern in Statesboro this summer to participate in the Governor’s Honors program. 

Carrollton High School juniors Alana Lee and Marie Fujita-Block were selected as finalists in the Governor’s Honors program. Juniors Jacob Preston and Christopher Watts were selected as alternates. Pictured from left are Christopher Watts, Marie Fujita-Block, Alana Lee and Jacob Preston.

The Governor’s Honors Program, known as GHP, is a four-week residential summer program for gifted and talented rising high school juniors and seniors.  Students who attend public, private, and home schools are eligible for nomination in one of 20 subject areas.

Alana will compete in Communicative Arts and Marie will compete in Science June 16 through July 13.

Other CHS semifinalists, Jacob Preston and Christopher Watts, are alternates. If selected, Jacob will focus on Chemistry and Christopher will focus on Engineering. Alternates will be notified in May if a slot becomes available in their area of concentration.

CHS has a strong legacy of producing GHP finalists. Over the last decade, more than 30 CHS students have been selected for the program.

CHS named AP STEM Honor School

Carrollton High School’s STEM initiative and its focus on increasing Advanced Placement (AP) course offerings and student participation have earned CHS state recognition as an AP STEM School. 

The Georgia Department of Education named the 2024 AP Honor Schools based on the results of 2023 AP courses and exams. 

To qualify as an AP STEM School, students must test in at least two AP math courses and two AP science courses. CHS and 275 other Georgia schools from 98 school districts qualified for this honor. 

“This recognition is a testament to the dedication of our students and teachers,” said Ian Lyle, CHS principal. “The Advanced Placement students choose to take more rigorous, time-consuming courses that will prepare them for college and beyond, while the AP teachers consistently show they not only care about their students but also want them to be pushed to their full potential.”

Dr. Mark Albertus, superintendent of Carrollton City Schools, not only commended CHS for the achievement, but placed credit on the lower schools as well.

“We should be very proud as a school system for this accomplishment,” said Albertus. “While it is obvious high school students are the ones who take Advanced Placement courses, it can’t be done without system-wide effort and support. The rigorous curriculum in place at all grade levels plays a pivotal role in preparing our students for success in their AP coursework.”

Carrollton High School offers a total of 18 Advanced Placement courses, including the classes recognized for the STEM focus: Statistics, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science and Physics. Other AP courses that are available are Government, World History, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, U.S. History, Language, World Literature, U.S. Literature, Studio Art, Psychology, and Human Geography. In addition to the AP offerings, CHS implemented the International Baccalaureate program in 2012, another route students can pursue to ensure academic rigor through more than a dozen more course offerings.

CHS students create app to help students in ESOL program

Three Carrollton High School students have developed an app to help students who are in the English Language Learners program. 

CHS students Merssy Larios-Bejarano, Makynna Goodman, and Mason Scoville developed ELLementary English. CHS teacher Robby Blakemore said the app was Merssy’s idea.

“Merssy is a former EL student who progressed out of the program a few years ago,” said Blakemore. “She has a great understanding of what it is like and also how to be successful in the program.”

Merssy said she wanted to make an app to help her peers who are learning a second language.

“I know how hard it is to feel behind or left out by your own class, which is a place where you need to feel safe and be able to learn new things everyday,” said Merssy. “I wanted to make something that could help students both academically and in their journey to learn a second language, which for many is not as easy as it is for others.”

Upon opening the app, users will see a scroll wheel of different categories, such as adjectives, family words, and school words. Once the desired category is chosen, a random word and its definition in English and Spanish from that category are generated.

Blakemore said the students hope to progress by adding more words, definitions, and pictures to help English learning students connect with what they are learning and to what they are seeing on a daily basis. 

“We entered this app into the Computer Science for Georgia App contest and will find out how we did soon,” said Blakemore. “But the students have continued working on it to make it a great resource for our growing ELL student population.”

The Computer Science for Georgia App and Design Challenge is a statewide computer programming competition for Georgia students. The goal is to allow middle and high school students to gain recognition for their app design and development skills. To promote awareness, community service, and innovation, the theme of this challenge is a “Community Advocacy Project.” This challenge encourages students to develop a mobile application that will solve a current problem facing their local community.
